Turkey: Court battle for Sarcophagus with the Labours of Hercules

 
 
 
Sarcophagus depicting the legendary Hercules and was mysteriously in Switzerland, it seems that is the product of illegal excavation and belongs to the "family" of artefacts of ancient Pergis, near Antalya, on Turkey's southern coast.

The sarcophagus seized in 2012 by the Customs authorities of Geneva and, according to two Turkish archaeologists who studied the find, probably comes from the specific area in which even has identified similar sarcophagus which is exposed in the archaeological museum and conjectured that it is work of the same artist or workshop.

The sarcophagus weighs 20 tons and bring performances by the labors of Hercules.

The project had been put up for sale by the Antiquities trading house «Phoenix Ancient Art Gallery, which has branches in New York and Geneva and supplies, among others, frontline museums like the Metropolitan Museum and the Louvre.

Turkey has moved the Court against that House and has requested the assistance of Swiss authorities.

Teachers Chaloyk Ampasogloy Nteleman and Intsi carried out excavations at Perge examined the sarcophagus and tabled in both the Swiss and Turkish prosecutors.

Swiss Prosecutor traveled to Turkey and met a Turk detained for another archaiokapilias case, but is considered suspect and for the sale of the sarcophagus of Herakles. The defendant confirmed that the sarcophagus was from a network of looters with accomplices in Switzerland, but claims that he did not have any connection with the case.

The Perge, today's Aksoy, was an important city of the southern coast of Asia minor during the Hellenistic and Roman times.
